Port Pirie’s new community-owned tertiary education centre has opened its doors with its official opening today by Member for Grey, the Hon Rowan Ramsey MP.

The Uni Hub kicks off its 2019 year with more than 50 pioneer students across its programs.

About 20 students have enrolled in a range of courses including bachelor degrees in psychology, nursing, education and social work and a Masters degree in education.

An additional 20 students are studying in the Skills for Tertiary Education Preparatory Studies (STEPS) program – an enabling course that provides a pathway for people wishing to gain entry to and excel in higher education.

A further 10 school students are taking advantage of the Start University Now (SUN) program which enables them to begin university studies while still at school.

Uni Hub Spencer Gulf board deputy chair Brenton Vanstone said the hub provided local people with a unique opportunity to develop their career without leaving the region.

“The students who are starting with us this year are our pioneers. They are leading the way and are the first to be studying with Uni Hub Spencer Gulf,” he said.

“Uni Hub gives them the space, the support and the technology to study individually and in groups.”

Mr Vanstone said Uni Hub Spencer Gulf played a key role in growing a pool of professionals from within the region to ensure a competitive, vibrant and selfrelevant economy and community.

“We want local industry to have a pipeline of skilled workforce to meet their needs,” he said.

“Our goal is to grow our own solutions and lift our overall capability in the region to attract future industry.”
